The History of 144 High Street,
Dunbar |
| |
We purchased this shop
in 2007 after it had been unoccupied for a
number of years, having previously been a toy shop. |
|
Our extensive renovation
of the property revealed two interesting
surprises. The first was finding an old range behind a boarded-up
fireplace. This range has been restored and now sits within the
fireplace area to the rear of the shop. |
|
The second surprise was
finding a window behind an inner bricked-up
wall. It was bricked-up on the outside as well. On removing both
walls
we found the window to be remarkably good condition. Opening it up
has brought much-needed natural light into the rear of the shop,
making it much more bright and airy. |
|
With
the help of Mr Cross, a local resident
who has stayed in Dunbar for many years,
we established that part of the original
Greyfriars Bobby film released in 1961 was
filmed within our shop. We understand
that the shop was trading as a hat shop at
the time. "Greyfriars Bobby himself sat in
that doorway." |
 |
|
In
1900 the shop was owned by William
Mather Belford, a butcher, who lived in the
flat above the shop. We found
some papers
during the restoration work
to back this up
and have been given more information by
local residents. |
|
|
In 1910 the shop was in
the hands of the Sinclair Family. Robert Munro
Sinclair was registered as the owner and the shop was being run as a
Drapers. The records show the same owner running the shop in years
1928/1929. |
|
| Skip forward to the
years 1953/54 and the shop is shown as owned by George Penny
Robertson ( trading as R. Sinclair & Co Drapers). |
|
The shop has now been
upgraded to a modern hi-tech office, but if
anyone can help us to fill-in the spaces in its history, we would
love
to hear from you. |
